An Aquaculture Specialist—often referred to as a fish farm manager, aquaculture engineer, aquatic animal health specialist, or aquafeed nutritionist—is a specialized aquatic science and production professional responsible for cultivating, breeding, and harvesting fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants in controlled or semi-controlled environments. Unlike traditional marine biologists who conduct observational research in wild ocean ecosystems, and unlike commercial fishermen who harvest wild fish stocks, aquaculture specialists apply biological science, water chemistry, and modern recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) to ensure sustainable, high-yield seafood production. This role exists within commercial fish farms, hatcheries, government fisheries departments, aquatic research institutes, feed manufacturing corporations, and international development agencies. Aquaculture specialists operate across indoor recirculating hatcheries, coastal marine net-pens, freshwater earthen ponds, water-testing laboratories, and corporate management offices. Work hours typically follow hands-on operational schedules, though feeding cycles, spawning seasons, water-quality monitoring, and emergency aeration interventions frequently require early mornings, weekend checks, and responsive on-site management.
