Audiologist

An audiologist is a healthcare professional who identifies, assesses, diagnoses, and manages disorders of the hearing, balance, and neural systems. Unlike hearing instrument specialists whose scope is primarily restricted to testing hearing and fitting basic amplification devices, and unlike otolaryngologists (ENT physicians) who specialize in medical and surgical interventions for ear, nose, and throat pathology, audiologists specialize in comprehensive auditory diagnostics, electrophysiological testing, vestibular function analysis, cochlear implant programming, tinnitus management, and aural rehabilitation. This role exists within hospital audiology departments, private audiology practices, otolaryngology (ENT) physician clinics, veteran affairs (VA) medical centers, pediatric hospitals, educational institutions, and industrial hearing conservation programs. Audiologists work in clean, quiet, sound-treated clinical environments. Work hours are typically standard weekday schedules, offering an excellent work-life balance with minimal emergency on-call duties compared to surgical or acute medical specialties.

What a Audiologist does

· Conduct comprehensive diagnostic hearing evaluations, including pure-tone audiometry, bone conduction testing, and speech recognition assessments. · Perform advanced electrophysiological tests such as Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) to evaluate neural pathway integrity. · Assess vestibular and balance systems using Videonystagmography (VNG), Video Head Impulse Testing (vHIT), and caloric testing to diagnose dizziness and vertigo. · Select, prescribe, program, and verify advanced digital hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and bone-anchored hearing systems (BAHS). · Program, map, and provide post-operative rehabilitative care for patients with cochlear implants and auditory brainstem implants
