A Correctional Officer—often referred to as a prison guard, detention officer, custodial officer, or correctional specialist—is a specialized law enforcement and public safety professional responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted and sentenced to serve time in a correctional facility. Unlike criminal defense lawyers who advocate for defendants, and unlike probation officers who supervise individuals released into the community, correctional officers manage the secure, orderly, and humane day-to-day operations inside jails, prisons, and detention centers. This role exists within maximum, medium, and minimum-security prisons, local pre-trial detention centers, juvenile reformatories, and specialized correctional institutions. Correctional officers operate across secure cell blocks, control rooms, visitation halls, perimeter watchtowers, and rehabilitation workshops. Work hours strictly follow round-the-clock shift systems, including nights, weekends, and holidays, due to continuous 24-hour facility operations.
