Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)—often referred to as an EMT-Basic—is a foundational pre-hospital emergency healthcare professional who provides basic life support (BLS), rapid assessment, stabilization, and emergency transport for sick and injured patients. Unlike advanced emergency medical responders or paramedics who perform advanced life support (ALS) procedures such as endotracheal intubation, intravenous (IV) line insertion, and advanced cardiac medication administration, EMTs specialize in rapid scene safety assessment, airway management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bleeding control, splinting, and immediate trauma triage. This role exists within municipal fire departments, private ambulance services, hospital-based emergency transport fleets, industrial safety teams, search and rescue squads, and event medical standby services. EMTs work in unpredictable, dynamic environments ranging from roadside highway accidents and residential homes to bustling urban streets. Work hours frequently include 12-hour or 24-hour shift rotations, requiring nights, weekends, and holiday coverage to ensure 24/7 emergency readiness.

What a Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) does

· Respond to emergency 911 dispatches and inter-facility transport requests, driving or staffing emergency ambulances with extreme safety and speed. · Conduct rapid primary and secondary patient assessments, evaluating airway status, breathing adequacy, circulation, and neurological function (GCS). · Administer basic life support interventions, including high-flow oxygen delivery, bag-valve-mask ventilations, and automated external defibrillation (AED). · Control severe hemorrhaging using direct pressure, wound packing, and arterial tourniquets in high-acuity trauma situations. · Manage spinal immobilization using cervical collars and backboards, and apply rigid or traction splints for suspected fractures
