Respiratory Therapist

A respiratory therapist (RT) is a specialized clinical healthcare professional who evaluates, treats, and cares for patients experiencing acute and chronic breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. Unlike general registered nurses who provide broad, holistic bedside nursing care across all organ systems, and unlike pulmonologists who are medical doctors specializing in the advanced medical and surgical management of lung diseases, respiratory therapists focus exclusively on the cardiopulmonary system, managing mechanical ventilators, administering aerosol medications, performing airway clearances, and executing life-saving emergency resuscitation. This role exists within hospital intensive care units (ICUs), emergency departments, neonatal and pediatric units, pulmonary rehabilitation clinics, sleep disorder centers, and home care agencies. Respiratory therapists work in fast-paced, high-acuity clinical environments. Work hours typically follow structured 12-hour or 8-hour shift rotations, frequently requiring nights, weekends, and holiday coverage due to the 24/7 critical nature of hospital respiratory care.

What a Respiratory Therapist does

· Evaluate patients with breathing difficulties, conducting physical assessments, auscultating breath sounds, and analyzing arterial blood gas (ABG) samples. · Set up, program, monitor, and troubleshoot mechanical ventilators for critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs). · Administer aerosolized medications, bronchodilators, mucolytics, and anti-inflammatory drugs via nebulizers, metered-dose inhalers, or humidification systems. · Perform life-saving emergency airway management, assisting physicians with endotracheal intubation, managing artificial airways, and executing emergency suctioning. · Conduct diagnostic pulmonary function tests (PFTs), spirometry, and exercise stress tests to measure lung capacity and airflow obstruction
