A Surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in performing operative procedures to treat diseases, injuries, and deformities. They diagnose conditions requiring surgical intervention, prepare patients for surgery, perform operations using a variety of instruments and techniques (open, laparoscopic, robotic), and manage post-operative care and recovery. Unlike non-surgical physicians who manage conditions with medication and lifestyle changes, surgeons physically manipulate tissues, remove diseased organs, repair injuries, and reconstruct body parts. This role exists within hospitals (academic medical centers, community hospitals, trauma centers), surgical centers (ambulatory surgery centers - ASCs), private practice (solo or group surgical practices), military medical facilities, Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals, academic institutions (teaching and research), specialty hospitals (orthopedic, cardiac, cancer, children's hospitals), and trauma centers (Level I to Level III). Surgeons specialize in diverse areas including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, transplant surgery, surgical oncology, and many others.
