Systems Administrator

A Systems Administrator (SysAdmin) is an IT infrastructure specialist responsible for the configuration, upkeep, reliable operation, and security of multi-user computing environments, including enterprise servers, virtualized clusters, cloud infrastructure, and user workstations. While network engineers build the underlying digital communication pathways and cybersecurity engineers monitor external threats, systems administrators manage the core computing engines where applications run, data is stored, and enterprise workflows live. This role exists across corporate enterprises, healthcare systems, educational institutions, government agencies, and cloud service providers. Systems administrators work closely with software developers, database administrators, network engineers, and IT directors. Standard office hours apply, though critical server patching, hardware replacements, and emergency outage troubleshooting often require scheduled after-hours maintenance windows or participation in on-call rotations. Remote, hybrid, and on-site configurations are all common depending on whether infrastructure is hosted on-premises or in the cloud.

What a Systems Administrator does

Manage Server Infrastructure: Deploy, configure, patch, and maintain physical and virtual servers running Linux (Ubuntu, RHEL) and Windows Server environments.. Administer Virtualization & Cloud Environments: Oversee hypervisors (VMware, Hyper-V) and cloud-native compute instances (AWS EC2, Azure Virtual Machines).. Handle Identity & Access Management: Administer user accounts, permissions, group policies, and directory services via Active Directory, LDAP, or cloud identity providers.. Execute Backups & Disaster Recovery: Implement, monitor, and test routine server backups, snapshot policies, and business continuity restoration plans.. Monitor System Performance: Track CPU utilization, memory consumption, disk capacity, and service health using monitoring and logging tools.

Systems Administrator skills required

Core Skills, Operating System Mastery: Deep command-line and administrative proficiency in Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu) and Microsoft Windows Server., Virtualization & Cloud Computing: Hands-on experience managing hypervisors (VMware vSphere, Hyper-V) and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure)., Directory Services & IAM: Understanding of Active Directory, Group Policy Objects (GPOs), DNS, DHCP, and IAM permissions., Scripting & Automation: Writing automation scripts in Bash, PowerShell, or Python to eliminate manual repetitive tasks., Storage & Backup Architecture: Knowledge of RAID configurations, Network Attached Storage (NAS), Storage Area Networks (SAN), and backup lifecycle strategies.
