Tourism Officer

A Tourism Officer—frequently referred to as a destination marketing officer, tourism development specialist, cultural heritage coordinator, visitor services manager, or municipal tourism officer—is a specialized destination marketing, cultural preservation, project management, and visitor experience professional responsible for promoting regional tourism, developing travel attractions, managing heritage sites, and collaborating with hospitality businesses to drive local economic growth. Unlike a private hotel or restaurant manager who focuses exclusively on the profitability of a single commercial venue, tourism officers oversee public-sector or destination-wide initiatives, designing regional tourism campaigns, organizing cultural festivals, supporting local artisans and tour operators, and enhancing visitor infrastructure. This role exists within government ministries, municipal tourism boards, destination marketing organizations (DMOs), heritage conservation trusts, national parks, airport welcome centers, and regional economic development agencies. Tourism officers operate across government offices, cultural exhibition centers, tourism information kiosks, and outdoor heritage sites. Work schedules typically encompass standard professional hours alongside occasional weekend travel, trade show attendance, and event coordination during festivals or tourist seasons.
