Travel Agent

A Travel Agent advises clients on travel destinations, plans itineraries, books transportation (flights, trains, cruises, rental cars), arranges accommodations (hotels, resorts, vacation rentals), and manages travel logistics (tours, activities, travel insurance, visas, passports). They leverage industry knowledge, vendor relationships, and booking systems to save clients time, money, and stress. Unlike online travel agencies (OTAs) (Expedia, Booking.com, Kayak) which offer self-service booking, travel agents provide personalized advice, problem-solving, and advocacy when things go wrong. This role exists within independent travel agencies (self-employed, home-based, franchise), host agencies (provide back-end support, ARC/IATA accreditation, commission processing for independent agents), consortia (marketing and purchasing groups for independent agencies), brick-and-mortar retail agencies (storefront), corporate travel agencies (managing business travel for companies), specialty travel agencies (luxury, adventure, family, group, destination weddings, cruises, Disney, river cruises, all-inclusive, eco-tourism), leisure travel agencies (vacations, honeymoons, group tours), online travel agencies (OTAs) (Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, Kayak, Travelocity, Orbitz, CheapTickets), tour operators (packaged tours (Globus, Trafalgar, Collette, Tauck, Insight Vacations, Intrepid, G Adventures)), cruise lines (in-house reservation agents), hotels and resorts (in-house reservation agents, group sales), corporate travel management companies (American Express Global Business Travel, BCD Travel, CWT, Direct Travel, FCM, Navan), and consolidators (wholesale airfare and hotel inventory for agents). Titles vary: Travel Agent, Travel Consultant, Leisure Travel Advisor, Corporate Travel Consultant, Cruise Specialist, Destination Wedding Specialist, Group Travel Coordinator, Luxury Travel Advisor, Adventure Travel Specialist, Disney Travel Planner, or Independent Travel Agent.
