Can Natural Talent Be Lost?

It is useful to distinguish between an underlying aptitude and the ability to perform a task well right now.

Becoming rusty

A person can become rusty when an ability is not exercised. Knowledge can fade. Skills can weaken. Confidence can decline. Physical or environmental circumstances can also change what someone can practically do.

That does not necessarily mean permanent loss

The underlying potential may not have disappeared. Someone who once regularly wrote may need substantial practice before writing confidently again after years away — but prior experience can still provide a foundation.

A better question

Rather than asking only "Did I lose my talent?" ask: What changed between the time I used this ability easily and now? The answer may reveal a lack of practice, opportunity, confidence, resources, or a change in priorities.
