Can Skills Be More Important Than Job Titles?

Job titles provide useful information.

But they can also hide important differences.

Two people may both be called "Manager" while possessing very different capabilities.

Likewise, someone without a traditional job title may have developed strong leadership, organising or entrepreneurial skills.

Skills Reveal Capability More Directly

A skills-based approach asks:

What can this person actually do?

rather than relying entirely on:

What has this person's previous job been called?

This can support:

  • career transitions
  • internal mobility
  • skills-based recruitment
  • workforce planning
  • development
  • project staffing

Job titles remain useful.

But they should not become the only language through which organisations understand human capability.
