Career vs Calling: What's the Difference?

A career is a person's professional journey. A calling is a deeper sense of purpose, responsibility or meaningful direction that may influence how someone chooses to use their life and abilities.

A calling does not necessarily equal a job title.

Someone may experience a calling toward teaching but express it through formal education, mentoring, writing, ministry or training.

A deeper perspective on work

Likewise, someone can have a career that provides income and development without considering it a calling.

The important distinction is that career answers more of the question:

"What path of work am I pursuing?"

while calling may address:

"What do I feel deeply responsible or compelled to contribute?"

For people who approach work from a Christian worldview, calling can also carry a distinctly spiritual meaning and should not be reduced simply to career preference.
