Coaching vs Managing

Managing and coaching are related but not identical.

Managing often involves:

  • setting expectations
  • allocating work
  • monitoring performance
  • making decisions
  • maintaining accountability
  • coordinating resources

Coaching focuses more strongly on helping a person develop their own understanding and capability.

A coach may ask:

"What do you think is causing the problem?"

rather than immediately saying:

"Here is what you should do."

Managers Need Both

Some situations require direct management.

If there is a safety issue, urgent deadline or serious performance problem, a manager may need to provide clear direction.

Other situations benefit from coaching.

For example:

  • career development
  • problem-solving
  • skill growth
  • self-awareness
  • leadership development

The strongest managers know when to direct, when to support and when to ask questions that help employees think for themselves.
