How Do I Discover My Strengths?

Discovering your strengths is more than writing down things you are good at.

A strength is often revealed through a combination of ability, repeated behaviour, effectiveness, energy, feedback and contribution. Some strengths are obvious, but others remain hidden because they feel so natural you assume everyone can do them.

01

Look for consistent patterns

What do people regularly ask you to help with? What tasks do you learn quickly? What activities produce good results for you?

02

Pay attention to what feels ordinary

Strengths are often underestimated because they don't feel difficult to the person who has them. What feels ordinary to you may be valuable to someone else.

03

Ask other people

Other people can see patterns you cannot. Ask trusted people: "What do you usually come to me for?" Look for repeated themes.

04

Personality is not strength

Being outgoing isn't the same as leadership strength. Personality influences how you express yourself, but strengths concern what you effectively contribute.
