How Do I Know If a Skill Comes Naturally to Me?

A skill may come naturally to you when certain aspects of performing it seem unusually intuitive compared with the effort required by others.

However, "natural" does not necessarily mean effortless. Sometimes a natural ability is hidden because you have spent so many years using it that you assume everyone can do the same thing.

Patterns to look for

Look for patterns rather than one-time experiences.

You might notice that you:

  • understand certain concepts quickly;
  • notice patterns others overlook;
  • explain complicated ideas naturally;
  • organize information without much instruction;
  • see practical solutions quickly;
  • communicate ideas easily;
  • notice details automatically;
  • anticipate problems;
  • create ideas repeatedly;
  • help people understand themselves;
  • naturally coordinate people or activities.

The deeper question

Another useful clue is feedback. If different people independently tell you that you are unusually good at something, that repeated observation deserves attention.

You should also distinguish natural ability from familiarity. Something may feel easy because you have practiced it extensively.

Penagix therefore treats self-discovery as broader than simply asking, "What am I good at?" The more useful question is:

What patterns of ability repeatedly appear in the way I think, solve problems, communicate, create, organize, relate, or contribute?

Those patterns can provide clues worth developing into skills.
