How Do I Know If I Should Change Careers?

Feeling frustrated does not automatically mean you need a new career.

The problem may be your employer, manager, workload, work environment, role, compensation, lack of growth, values mismatch or skill mismatch.

First identify what exactly is wrong.

01

Ask diagnostic questions

Do I dislike the profession or simply my current workplace? Are my strengths being used? Are my values being respected? Am I still learning? Does the work interest me? Is the problem temporary or persistent?

02

Have you explored alternatives within the field?

Before making a major change, explore whether different roles, responsibilities, organizations or environments within your current field might address what is wrong.

03

When career change deserves serious consideration

If the profession itself consistently conflicts with your interests, values, abilities and desired direction, career change may deserve serious consideration.

04

Make it an informed transition

A career change should ideally be an informed transition rather than an emotional escape. Understanding yourself clearly before moving gives the new direction the best chance of actually fitting.
