How Managers Can Help Employees Develop Their Skills
Employee development does not happen only in training rooms.
Much of it happens through actual work.
Managers can create development opportunities by giving employees opportunities to:
- solve unfamiliar problems
- lead projects
- present ideas
- mentor others
- work across departments
- practise new technical skills
- receive feedback
- take increasing responsibility
A Useful Development Cycle
Identify → Practise → Apply → Receive Feedback → Adjust → Repeat
Training can provide knowledge.
Experience provides application.
Feedback provides direction.
Practice builds capability.
Development Should Be Individualised
Employees do not necessarily need the same development plan.
A person may need stronger communication.
Another may need technical depth.
Another may need leadership experience.
The manager's role is not to develop every employee in exactly the same way.
It is to help each person make meaningful progress toward the capabilities required for their current and future contribution.
