How Purpose Can Influence Employee Motivation
Purpose can answer: "Why does this work matter?"
The connection
A person may be more motivated when they can connect daily tasks with an outcome they value. For example, a teacher connecting lesson preparation with student development, or an analyst connecting accurate research with better decisions.
Changing interpretation
Purpose does not eliminate difficult tasks. Instead, it can change how a person interprets the task.
Not a substitute
Organizations should not use "purpose" as a substitute for fair conditions. Telling an exhausted employee that their work has purpose does not automatically solve workload, compensation, leadership or resource problems.
