How to Identify When an Employee Is Misaligned With Their Role

Misalignment should not be diagnosed from one bad week.

Managers should look for persistent patterns.

01

Compare the Person and the Role

Ask:

Skills:

Does the employee have or can they develop the required capabilities?

Strengths:

Are important capabilities being used?

Motivation:

Does the work provide meaningful reasons to engage?

Values:

Are there persistent conflicts with what matters to the employee?

Environment:

Does the working context create unnecessary friction?

Expectations:

Are responsibilities and success criteria clear?

02

Then Check the Organisation

Misalignment may not originate with the employee.

The problem could be:

  • poor onboarding
  • inadequate training
  • unclear leadership
  • unrealistic workload
  • insufficient resources
  • dysfunctional team dynamics

Only after these possibilities are explored should managers consider whether there is a deeper role-fit issue.
