How to Identify Your Ideal Workplace Values

Finding your ideal workplace is not simply about finding an impressive company.

It is about understanding what kind of environment allows you to work well and remain aligned with what matters to you.

01

Identify your personal values

Start with a broad list. Examples include: autonomy, stability, learning, service, achievement, creativity, collaboration, fairness, leadership, flexibility, recognition.

02

Narrow the list

Choose the five values that matter most. Then identify your top three.

03

Define what each value means to you

"Autonomy" might mean freedom to choose your methods. "Learning" might mean access to training and challenging projects. Do not leave your values as vague words.

04

Identify behaviours that demonstrate them

Ask: "What would I actually see in a workplace where this value is present?"

05

Research organizations carefully

Look beyond employer marketing. Read job descriptions. Study leadership communication. Speak with current or former employees when possible. Ask interview questions about working practices.

06

Compare expectations

Look for areas of strong alignment and significant conflict. The objective is not to find a perfect workplace. It is to find an environment where your important values can reasonably coexist with the organization's way of working.
