How to Know When a Career May Not Fit You

A career may deserve reconsideration when:

Warning signs

You strongly dislike the actual daily activities; the core responsibilities conflict with important values; you have little willingness to develop the required capabilities; the work environment consistently clashes with essential preferences; your interest exists only in the public image of the career; you have repeatedly tested the work and disliked the reality.

Look for patterns

One bad experience does not automatically prove poor fit. Also distinguish: "I am not yet good at this" from "I have no willingness to become good at this." Skill gaps can often be developed. Persistent lack of interest, values conflict, or unwillingness to perform the core work may be more significant.

Better career decisions come from combining self-understanding with evidence about real opportunities.
