How to Match Skills to Team Responsibilities
A useful skills-to-responsibility process is:
List responsibilities
Write the actual work that must be done.
Identify required skills
For each responsibility, ask: “What capability is required to do this well?”
Assess current capability
Use evidence such as: previous work; projects; demonstrations; qualifications; assessments; feedback.
Identify gaps
A gap does not necessarily mean: “This person cannot do it.” It may mean: “This person needs development or support.”
Match responsibility
Where possible, align responsibilities with demonstrated capability.
Consider complementary capability
One person may be strong at analysis while another is strong at communication. The team can use both.
Review outcomes
After implementation, ask: Did the match work? Was the responsibility clear? Did the person have sufficient resources? What should change? This prevents skill matching from becoming a rigid labeling system.
Team contribution is more than just completing a task.
