How to Recognize Career Stagnation: Signs Your Growth Has Slowed

Career stagnation is more than staying in the same job for a long time. A professional may be progressing in place, or they may be standing still.

Possible signals

Your responsibilities have barely changed for years; you are no longer learning much from the work; you repeatedly solve the same problems; your strongest capabilities are rarely used; you have no clear development target; feedback has become predictable; opportunities to take meaningful responsibility are limited; your values have changed but your role has not; you cannot identify what the next stage of your career should be.

The useful test

"Am I intentionally maintaining this position, or have I remained here simply because I have not examined what comes next?" One sign alone does not prove stagnation. A stable role may be exactly right for someone at a particular stage.

Your career is more than your current job title. Understand your natural gifts, skills and values, then use them to make more intentional career decisions.
