Can Someone Be Intelligent but Struggle Academically?
Academic performance matters. But academic performance does not provide a complete measurement of every human capability. Grades can be influenced by: preparation; study habits; attendance; motivation; assessment format; subject familiarity; learning environment; support; time management; personal circumstances. Someone may perform poorly in one academic environment while demonstrating strong ability in another context.
But Be Careful With the Opposite Claim
It is also inaccurate to tell every struggling student: "Your grades don't matter because you are secretly gifted." There may be genuine knowledge gaps or skills that need development. The healthy approach is to ask: What does the academic evidence show? and also: What other evidence tells us about this person's abilities?
Other Evidence
That may include: projects; practical work; creative output; leadership; communication; problem-solving; community contribution; technical work.
