Leadership vs Authority: What's the Difference?
Authority is the legitimate power associated with a position, role, rule or institutional structure. Leadership is broader.
A person may have authority but little genuine influence.
A manager can say: “Do this because I am responsible for this department.” A leader may instead create: “Here is why this matters, here is where we are going, and here is how we will contribute.”
The strongest leaders can use authority responsibly without depending entirely on it. Authority can compel compliance. Leadership can help generate commitment.
In real organizations, both can operate together.
Leadership can be developed.
