How Managers Can Discuss Workplace Values With Employees

Managers should not assume that every employee is motivated by the same things.

A useful values conversation can help managers understand what employees consider important in their work experience. Instead of asking "Are you happy here?", ask more specific questions.

01

Explore meaning

Ask: "What part of your work feels most meaningful to you?" This can reveal what the employee values.

02

Explore environment

Ask: "What kind of working environment helps you perform at your best?" This can reveal preferences around autonomy, structure and collaboration.

03

Explore recognition and growth

Ask: "What makes you feel your contribution is valued?" and "What would you like to learn or develop next?"

04

Explore misalignment

Ask: "What aspects of your current role feel least aligned with how you work best?" This can reveal potential workplace mismatch.

05

Acknowledge differences

The goal is not to make every employee fit one model. Good management recognizes differences. One employee may thrive with independence; another may perform best with clear structure.

06

Align where possible

The manager's responsibility is not necessarily to remove every difference. It is to understand the person well enough to align responsibilities, development opportunities and management practices where reasonably possible.
