Managing Strengths vs Correcting Weaknesses
Managers sometimes face a false choice:
Should I focus on strengths or weaknesses?
In reality, both matter.
Strength Development
Strengths can be:
- deepened
- applied
- expanded
- transferred
- connected to larger responsibilities
Weakness Management
Not every weakness requires complete transformation.
Some weaknesses simply need to be managed so they do not prevent effective performance.
For example, an employee with excellent analytical ability may not need to become an exceptional public speaker.
But if presenting is essential to their role, they may need sufficient communication ability to explain their work effectively.
A Better Question
Instead of asking:
"How do I eliminate every weakness?"
ask:
"Which weaknesses materially limit contribution, and which strengths could create greater value if developed?"
Good management balances performance requirements, development needs and individual strengths.
