Motivation vs Engagement: What's the Difference?
Motivation and engagement overlap but should not be treated as identical.
Motivation
Concerns why and toward what a person directs effort. It can involve internal interest, personal values, meaningful goals, external rewards, pressure, or identified importance.
Engagement
Describes a person's psychological investment and involvement in their work. A person can be motivated without being highly engaged in every task (e.g. "I need this salary"). Likewise, someone can be highly engaged in a project because they find it meaningful and absorbing.
Better employee development begins with understanding the people behind the roles.
