Passion vs Purpose

Generally refers to something that strongly interests, excites or engages you. It describes the intensity of your emotional connection to an activity, subject or idea.

Is more closely connected to meaning, direction and the contribution you want your life or work to make. It tends to be broader and more durable than a single passion.

You can be passionate about photography, for example, without knowing whether photography represents your long-term purpose. Likewise, someone can feel a strong sense of purpose in helping young people develop while not being passionate about every task involved.

Passion asks: What deeply interests or energizes me? Purpose asks: What meaningful direction or contribution do I want my life to serve? The two can overlap. Your passion may provide clues about your purpose. But passion alone should not automatically determine a career.

If you confuse passion with purpose, you may feel pressured to turn every strong interest into a profession. Instead, ask what your interests reveal about you — and what meaningful contribution those interests might support. Passion can provide energy. Purpose can provide direction.
