Personality vs Values
Personality and values both influence behaviour, but they answer different questions.
Personality asks more about how you tend to operate.
Values ask more about what matters to you.
Personality
Describes behavioural tendencies — how you tend to think, feel and interact. It is relatively consistent across situations and describes your manner of engaging with the world.
Values
Describe what matters to you, what you consider important or worthwhile, and what principles guide your decisions. Values influence career choices, workplace preferences, decision-making and motivation.
Why they differ
A person may naturally be quiet but strongly value leadership. Someone may be highly energetic but deeply value stability. Someone may prefer independent work while strongly valuing community. Personality alone cannot tell you what a person considers important.
The practical implication
Personality may help explain behavioural tendencies. Values can help explain why certain outcomes matter. Understanding the distinction can prevent people from assuming that a personality profile automatically reveals their values.
