Purpose and career are related, but they are not the same thing.
Career
A career describes the professional direction through which you develop and apply your abilities over time.
Purpose
Purpose can describe the deeper reason, direction or contribution that gives significance to what you do.
A career can therefore become one channel through which purpose is expressed.
For example, a person whose deeper contribution involves helping people develop may express that through:
- teaching
- coaching
- counselling
- leadership
- human resources
- education
- entrepreneurship
The job title can change while the underlying contribution remains surprisingly consistent.
This is why people sometimes experience a sense of continuity even when they change careers.
The profession changed.
The way they create value remained.
