Questions Parents Can Ask During Career Conversations
Good career conversations do not require parents to have all the answers.
Often, the most valuable thing a parent can provide is a good question. The following questions can help children develop self-understanding without feeling that they are being forced to produce a career title.
Questions about Natural Gifts
What seems to come naturally to you? What do people usually ask you to help with? What kind of problems do you naturally notice?
Questions about Skills
What are you becoming good at? What have you learned recently that you can actually use? What skill would you like people to recognize you for?
Questions about Interests
What subjects or activities make you curious? What do you enjoy learning about outside school? Which interest would you like to explore more deeply?
Questions about Values
What matters most to you in the kind of life you want? What kind of work would make you feel that you are doing something worthwhile? What kind of impact would make you proud?
Questions about Uncertainty and Experience
What are you unsure about? What options are you considering? When have you felt most useful? What activity made you feel proud of your contribution?
The Most Important Question
Perhaps one of the most useful questions is simply: "What are you discovering about yourself?" That question leaves room for development.
