Why Do I Understand Something but Struggle to Apply It?

This is extremely common. Understanding gives you a mental model. Application requires performance.

Consider a Simple Example

You may understand how a good interview answer should be structured. But when the interviewer asks an unexpected question, you may struggle. Why? Because real performance requires more than remembering a framework. You must: understand the question; select relevant information; organize your thoughts; communicate under pressure; adapt to the situation.

What Can Help?

Use a gradual progression: Learn → Explain → Practise → Receive Feedback → Correct → Repeat → Apply. Do not wait until you feel completely ready before practising. Practice is part of how readiness develops.

A Useful Question

Instead of asking: "Do I understand this?" also ask: "Can I demonstrate this?" That second question can reveal the difference between knowledge and skill.
