What Is Human Potential?

Human potential refers broadly to the capacity a person may have to develop, learn, contribute or achieve beyond what they are currently demonstrating.

That last part matters.

Potential is not the same thing as current performance.

01

Potential and performance are different

A student may currently perform poorly in a particular subject while possessing strengths that have not been recognized or developed. A graduate may have little professional experience while possessing strong abilities that could become valuable with the right opportunities. A professional may be performing adequately in a role while having capabilities that are being underused.

02

Potential concerns possibility, not guaranteed outcomes

Having potential does not automatically mean someone will succeed. Development requires conditions — opportunity, practice, education, feedback, encouragement, resources, appropriate challenges, supportive environments, motivation and persistence.

03

A person may possess potential but never receive the conditions to express it

This does not mean every person secretly possesses extraordinary ability. It means that potential cannot be fully evaluated without considering the conditions available to the person.

How Penagix views potential

Potential becomes particularly interesting when considered alongside natural gifts, skills, values and career direction. A natural gift may point toward an area of potential. Skill development can turn that possibility into demonstrated capability. Experience can provide evidence.

05

The development pathway

Potential leads to development, which leads to capability, which leads to demonstrated contribution. The purpose of discovering potential is not simply to tell someone what they could become. It is to help them understand what may be worth developing and where that development could create meaningful value.
