What Is Leadership Skill?

Leadership skill is the capability to help people move toward a shared objective through direction, decisions, communication, coordination, responsibility, and influence. Leadership is not identical to having a title.

Leadership can be demonstrated by

Clarifying a goal; organizing people; making difficult decisions; taking responsibility; resolving conflict; developing others; communicating priorities; creating conditions for others to contribute.

How to judge leadership quality

Partly by what happens to the group and the work — not simply by how authoritative the leader appears.

A skill can be developed. But understanding how a capability connects with your natural gifts, values, and possible career direction can make development more intentional.
