What Is Skills Mapping?

Skills mapping is the process of identifying, organizing and understanding the skills available within an individual, team or organization and comparing those capabilities with the skills required for current or future work.

At its simplest, skills mapping answers three questions: What skills do we have? What skills do we need? What is the gap between the two?

01

More than a résumé

A résumé primarily describes experience and qualifications. A skills map attempts to create a structured picture of capability, capturing skills developed through formal education, employment, and self-directed learning.

02

What it contains

A useful map includes technical skills, transferable skills, leadership capabilities, analytical abilities, digital capabilities, and proficiency levels.

03

Connecting to role requirements

By comparing an employee's demonstrated capabilities with role requirements, organizations can identify both fit and development opportunities.

04

Integrating natural gifts
