Why Am I Good at My Job but Unhappy at Work?

Being good at something does not guarantee that you will enjoy the environment in which you do it.

You may have strong technical skills but dislike

The management style; the pace; the culture; the communication pattern; the lack of autonomy; the amount of social interaction; the lack of development; the mismatch with your values.

Separate four questions

1. Do I like the work? (the actual tasks). 2. Do I fit the role? (responsibilities and expectations). 3. Do I fit the workplace? (culture and working conditions). 4. Does the career direction still fit me? (longer-term path).

Next steps

If the work itself is satisfying but the workplace is not, changing employers may be more relevant than changing careers. If the work itself has become misaligned, a broader career review may be necessary.

Your workplace is only one part of career alignment.
