Why Students Should Understand Their Values Before Choosing a Career
Students often receive career advice based on grades, salary, prestige, or job availability. Those factors can matter. But students also need to understand what matters to them.
Values can include priorities such as
Learning; autonomy; stability; service; creativity; achievement; security; leadership; contribution; flexibility.
Values do not automatically tell a student which career to choose
Instead, they provide another lens for evaluating options. A student who values continuous learning may investigate whether a career provides meaningful opportunities to keep developing. A student who strongly values autonomy may investigate how much independence different occupations actually provide.
Your career journey does not have to begin with knowing everything. It can begin with understanding yourself better.
