Why Values Fit Matters in Organizations
People do not bring skills to work alone.
They also bring values.
Values influence what people consider important, acceptable, meaningful or worth pursuing.
An employee may value:
- autonomy
- accuracy
- service
- creativity
- achievement
- stability
- learning
- fairness
- innovation
- contribution
Why This Matters
Imagine an employee who strongly values autonomy working in an environment where every small decision requires approval.
The person may have the necessary skills.
The role may even match their experience.
Yet the environment could create persistent friction.
Values fit therefore does not mean that every employee must think identically.
A healthy organisation can contain people with different values.
The important question is whether the individual's important values can reasonably coexist with the expectations of the role and organisation.
