How Communication Affects Team Performance
Teams need communication to coordinate work. But more communication does not automatically mean better teamwork.
Useful team communication includes: clear expectations; relevant information; active listening; knowledge sharing; constructive feedback; clarification; decision communication; appropriate documentation.
Poor communication can create: duplicated work; conflicting assumptions; missed information; unnecessary delays; avoidable conflict.
Therefore the question should not simply be: “How often does the team communicate?” Ask: “Does the team's communication help people understand, coordinate and act?”
Team contribution is more than just completing a task.
