How Environment Influences Skill Development
People do not develop skills in isolation.
What environment determines
Whether practice opportunities exist; whether mistakes can be corrected safely; whether feedback is available; whether mentors are accessible; whether the necessary tools exist; whether the person receives increasing responsibility; whether good performance is recognized.
Capability vs opportunity
A capable person in an environment with no opportunity to practice may progress slowly. An environment that provides demanding tasks, feedback, support, and autonomy can accelerate development.
The dual question
Not only "Does this person have the skill?" but also "Has this person had a realistic opportunity to demonstrate and develop it?"
Knowing your skills is useful. Understanding where those skills come from, which abilities may support them, and where they can take you gives you a much clearer picture.
