How Skills Are Developed
Skill development is a progression rather than a single event.
The development model
Understand → Attempt → Practice → Receive feedback → Adjust → Apply → Repeat → Increase complexity.
Understand
Build enough knowledge to know what the task requires.
Attempt
Perform the task before you are fully proficient.
Practice
Repeat the relevant actions with attention to quality.
Feedback
Identify errors, blind spots, and opportunities to improve.
Application
Use the skill in a realistic situation. This is why merely completing a course does not automatically mean a skill has been developed.
Knowing your skills is useful. Understanding where those skills come from, which abilities may support them, and where they can take you gives you a much clearer picture.
