How to Build a Personal Development Plan
A personal development plan should answer: What am I developing, why am I developing it, how will I develop it, and how will I know I have improved?
Choose a priority
Do not begin with ten major goals. Choose one to three important areas.
Define the current state
What can you currently do?
Define the desired state
What should you be able to do?
Identify the gap
What is preventing the desired outcome?
Choose development activities
These could include: courses; reading; practice; projects; mentoring; volunteering; coaching; teaching; workplace assignments.
Set a timeframe
Give the development effort a review date.
Define evidence
What will prove progress? Examples: completed project; improved performance; successful presentation; portfolio; feedback; measurable result.
Review
A development plan should be adjustable. Your understanding will improve as you gain experience.
Development starts with self-awareness.
Understand your patterns, natural gifts, and values to create a focused and meaningful path for personal growth.
