How to Explain Transferable Skills in Interviews

Interviews give you an opportunity to connect your past experience to the employer's needs. A useful structure is: Situation → Action → Skill → Result → Relevance

1

Example

Instead of: "I have leadership skills." say: "In my previous role, I coordinated a small team during a time-sensitive project. I divided responsibilities, monitored progress and resolved issues as they emerged. We completed the project on schedule. That experience developed my ability to coordinate people and maintain progress under pressure, which I believe is relevant to this role." The candidate has not merely claimed leadership. They have demonstrated it.

2

Make the Transfer Explicit

The interviewer may not automatically understand how your previous experience applies. Help them see the connection.
