How to Identify Your Core Values
You do not need to pick a values list from a chart. Start by studying what has actually mattered to you.
List moments that mattered
Think of experiences that made you feel deeply satisfied, proud, frustrated, or disappointed.
Ask what was underneath the reaction
Why did the experience matter? Was it because of freedom, fairness, learning, recognition, service, quality, belonging, achievement, security, or something else?
Look for repetition
If the same principle appears across different situations, it may represent an important value.
Examine trade-offs
"If I had to choose between these two things, which would I protect?" Trade-offs often reveal priorities more clearly than value lists.
Test the values against your life
"Does this value actually explain some of my decisions?" Do not choose a word simply because it sounds admirable.
Your values can tell you what matters. Your gifts and skills can help reveal how you may express it.
