How to Prioritize Your Personal Values When They Conflict

Having a list of ten important values does not tell you what to do when two values conflict.

01

Choose your top values

Start with 5–10.

02

Compare them in pairs

"If I could protect only one of these in this particular situation, which matters more?"

03

Record the difficult choices

Do not assume the answer will be the same in every context.

04

Identify non-negotiables

Some values may be essential while others are preferences.

05

Test the ranking against real decisions

"Does this priority explain choices I have actually made?" Values are not a competition where one word must permanently defeat all others. Their relative priority can depend on context.

Your values can tell you what matters. Your gifts and skills can help reveal how you may express it.
