How to Practice a Skill Effectively

Effective practice starts with a target.

Specific over general

Instead of "Practice writing," try: "Write three introductions for the same topic and compare which one creates the clearest promise for the reader."

The practice cycle

1. Perform the task. 2. Evaluate the result. 3. Identify one weakness. 4. Correct it. 5. Repeat. 6. Increase the challenge. 7. Apply the skill in a different context.

Keep a short practice record

Date → task → what went well → error → adjustment → next target. This turns practice from a vague activity into a development process.

Knowing your skills is useful. Understanding where those skills come from, which abilities may support them, and where they can take you gives you a much clearer picture.
