How Deliberate Practice Improves Skills and Performance

Deliberate practice is more structured than simply spending time on an activity.

The deliberate practice cycle

1. Select a specific component to improve. 2. Attempt it at an appropriate level of challenge. 3. Observe performance. 4. Receive useful feedback. 5. Correct errors. 6. Repeat the task. 7. Gradually increase difficulty.

Public speaking example

Someone improving public speaking might not simply "give more speeches." They could deliberately practice: opening a presentation; reducing filler words; explaining one complex idea; answering difficult questions; improving transitions. The narrower target makes practice more informative.

Knowing your skills is useful. Understanding where those skills come from, which abilities may support them, and where they can take you gives you a much clearer picture.
