Should You Choose a Career Based on Passion?
Passion can be useful information, but it is risky to treat passion as the only career decision rule.
What does your passion actually mean?
Do you enjoy: the subject? the activity? learning about it? performing it? teaching it? solving problems in the field? or simply consuming content about it? Those are not necessarily the same thing.
A career requires more than passion
A career also requires competence, opportunity, sustained effort, and willingness to perform less glamorous parts of the work.
The better question
"How can what I care deeply about connect with my natural gifts, skills, values, and realistic opportunities?" Passion can be a signal. It does not have to be the entire map.
Better career decisions come from combining self-understanding with evidence about real opportunities.
