What Is a Skill?

A skill is a developed capability to perform a task, process, activity, or type of response with increasing effectiveness.

Knowledge, skill, experience, and competence

Knowledge = what you understand. Skill = what you can apply. Experience = what you have encountered or done. Competence = how reliably you can perform to an expected standard.

Skills develop through the full cycle

Learning, practice, feedback, application, and increasingly complex challenges.

Skills can be technical, interpersonal, cognitive, creative, practical, organizational, or transferable

A strong skill profile describes not only what someone has learned, but what they can actually do with it.

Knowing your skills is useful. Understanding where those skills come from, which abilities may support them, and where they can take you gives you a much clearer picture.
